Brian Smith
Project Manager / OwnerBrian Smith is an experienced Site Manager, Builder, and Project Manager with over 25 years of experience delivering residential and commercial construction projects. His background covers all aspects of construction, from foundations and structural work through to recladding, renovations, new builds, and project delivery.
Brian holds a Heavy Class 2 Licence and is an experienced operator of excavators, tip trucks, tracked bobcats, and other site machinery. He is a TSL-approved operator and has completed 4WD recovery training, HazardCo health and safety training, and trauma first aid training, bringing a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and practical problem-solving to every project.
Known for his hands-on approach and leadership skills, Brian is equally comfortable managing subcontractors, coordinating complex site operations, operating machinery, or working alongside crews to ensure projects are completed to a high standard.
Outside of work, Brian is a devoted husband and proud father of three children. He is actively involved in his local community and regularly participates in regional park planting days, volunteer beach clean-ups, and track maintenance and remedial works. He values environmental stewardship, community involvement, and passing on a strong work ethic to the next generation.
Brian combines extensive industry experience, practical construction knowledge, strong leadership, and a commitment to safety and quality, making him a trusted professional across a wide range of construction and infrastructure projects.
Scott Miller
Site Manager / OwnerBrian and I have been working together for over 10 years. From the beginning, we quickly realised we shared the same values, work ethic, and passion for doing things properly. We both bring different strengths to the business, and we enjoy learning from each other along the way. That teamwork and shared approach flows through everything we do at Building Works and the great team we have built around us.
I’ve been around the building industry for as long as I can remember, with my dad working as a draughtsman, so construction has always been part of my world. I started my building career over 30 years ago, completing my apprenticeship while renovating villas around central Auckland. Those early years taught me a lot, from basement dig outs and underpinning foundations to structural steel installations for home additions and extensions. It was hands on experience that gave me a real appreciation for quality workmanship and attention to detail.
After running my own renovation business for several years, I took the opportunity to work as a carpenter on Superyachts. Being involved in the decommissioning and reinstatement of large sections of these vessels exposed me to a whole new level of precision and craftsmanship. The attention to detail I experienced during that time is something I still carry into every project today, from the first set out through to the finished home.
The best part of what I do is standing back at the end of a project and seeing everything come together. There’s something pretty special about creating a space that people will enjoy for years to come.
When I’m not building, you’ll usually find me on the water. I enjoy kiteboarding, diving, and making the most of the outdoors whenever I can. One of my favourite trips was spending three weeks diving in Raja Ampat, where I was lucky enough to experience some of the most incredible marine life and untouched reefs in the world.
